Children being place value and numbers

We were looking at place value and what the numbers meant. So the children became the numbers and the place value positions. We looked at how many 10's and 100's were in the numbers, what was 10 more, 10 less, 1 more, 1 less and even 100 more and 100 less. Why not test your children on this knowledge at home?

Our reading lesson today

We have been reading a book in class called, The Charlie Small first journal - Gorilla City. The children and I have really enjoyed reading the first book and we are looking forward to the second book. Please ask your child and see what they tell you.
Today in reading I photocopied a section of the book and with groups 1 & 2 we looked at verbs. We underlined the words we thought were verbs then checked in the dictionary to make sure.
we also started to draw what we thought Charlie Small looked like - as we don's see any pictues of him in the book. We have turned this into a competition. The best picture of Charlie will be turned into a full size version for a display in the library!

Our maths lesson today.

We are learning all about co-ordinates, directions, NESW, position etc. Miss Edwards made a treasure hunt around the school. She gave us a map of the school and a set of co-ordinates. We had to locate the co-ordinate on the map and then go to that location to find a clue. We had 12 clues to find. At each co-ordinate there was a letter. We had to write the letters down. Once we had all 12 we came back to the classroom where we tried to work out what word all the letters made. The answer was, 'Charlie Small'. This is the name of the boy in the adventure story we are reading.
Earlier in the day we had been working on 'proper nouns' so when we saw the capital letters that would have given us a clue that we were looking for a name of a person or a place.
Although Waima and Neve got back to the class first it was Elin and Tauryn who worked out the word first. They won the treasure box.
Well done to all of room 20 - you did really well. You certainly got lots of exercise today. Did you enjoy it?

Maths this week

Maths
WALT: give and follow directions using North, South, East and West. Draw and follow a path to show a route followed.
First we read the book Hanzel and Grettel. Then we discussed the various routes the children had taken in the story. First they were taken into the woods by their father. He left them there but they found their way home (route A). Again the father took the children back into the woods and left them there (route B). This time they could not find their way back, but they did manage to find a gingerbread house. They stayed there with the wicked witch for a while then managed to escape back home (route C).
On a grid the children drew their own version of the story and the routes taken. In their maths books they wrote down the route by using NESW directions. For example, Route A was: 4S, 3E, 5W, 2S, 3N, 2W.
The children checked each other’s maps by following the instructions from the maths books.

Painting in room 20

First we were learning different painting techniques like; combing, dotting, scratching, sponging and dragging. Then we did our spellings painting with our fingers - that was fun! Finally, while the paints were out and considering that painting can be quite a mission with 30 chidlren, we decided to paint our portraits in the style of Pablo Piccaso!
